yarraReporter

yarraReporter is a training program giving public housing estate residents in the City of Yarra the skills and means to publish stories that matter to them and their community.

This civic journalism project is an initiative of Infoxchange Australia to build skills, capacity, social contribution and leadership amongst residents by modelling cooperative social change in community activities, local news gathering, editing, writing, interviewing and internet broadcasting.

The training is based on an active learning process that suits participants’ needs as adults: respecting and acknowledging that they have a vast amount of experience and responsibility to solve problems and to make decisions. The first group of participants completed the training in March 2009 and have had their stories not only published on the yarraReporter website, but also in other media including New Australia Media.

Participants commonly write about topics that affect their day-to-day lives on their local housing estate and within their immediate community, such as resident group elections and social activities, and represent many of the diverse multicultural groups in inner Melbourne.
